Frequently Asked Questions From the Massage Therapist

What to expect from your ExpressionS Spa experience

… and Commonly Asked Questions

~ How often should I schedule my appointments?

Every guest is different, depending on the individual’s lifestyle.  We suggest scheduling your appointments for every 4-6 weeks to start out.  You can adjust the appointments later if you feel you need to come in more or less often.

~ What health information should I provide?

You will be asked to provide certain information to the massage therapist about your past and current health.  This information is used to help plan your massage session and to ensure your safety.  More information may be requested if a specific health problem is being addressed.  This information will be confidential.

~Who will perform the massage or body work?

Your session will be conducted by a licensed professional who has received proper training, often in a variety of techniques.  When scheduling your appointment, you can specify the type of massage you would like to receive.

~Will my practitioner be present when I disrobe?

After reviewing your Massage Client Information Form with you and assessing your needs, the therapist will leave the room while you undress.  He/she will instruct you how to lie on the table under a sheet.  Your therapist will knock on the door before re-entering.

~Are there different kinds of massage and bodywork?

There are numerous types of massages and bodywork.  Various techniques utilize different strokes, including basic rubbing strokes, rocking movement, posture and movement reeducation, application of pressure to specific points and more. ExpressionS offers different types of massages.  Ask your therapist which one is right for you.

~What should I do during the massage or bodywork session?

Make yourself comfortable.  The therapist will either gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as lifting your arm).  Many people just close their eyes and completely relax.  Feel free to ask the therapist questions and to let him/her know if something is uncomfortable.

~Where will my massage or bodywork session take place?

Your massage or bodywork session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room.  Soft music may be played to help you relax.  You will lie on a table especially designed for your comfort.

~ Must I be completely undressed?

Most massage and bodywork techniques are performed with the client unclothed; however, you may decide what amount of clothing you prefer to wear for your own comfort.  The Lomi Lomi massage is ideally done when the client is completely undressed if they are comfortable doing so.  You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable.

~ What parts of my body will be massaged?

You and your practitioner will discuss the desired outcome of your session.  This will determine which parts of your body require massage.  A typical full body session will include work on your back, arms, legs, hips, feet, hands, head, neck and shoulders.

~What will the massage or bodywork feel like?

The therapist will use either a massage cream or oil during the massage to be able to work the muscles effectively without pulling on skin.  Usually you will feel relaxed, however, during some techniques, you may experience some discomfort as the muscle tension is worked out.  You may also experience some heat from some of the aromatherapy oils.  If at anytime you feel pain or extreme discomfort, please let the therapist know at once.

~ How long will the session last?

The average full-body massage or bodywork session lasts approximately one hour.  A half-hour appointment only allows time for a partial massage session, such as neck and shoulders, back, or legs and feet.  Many people prefer a 60- to 90-minute session for optimal relaxation.  Always allow relaxation time prior to and after the session.  Hot tubs, steam baths and saunas can assist in the relaxation process (not available on site at this time).
